Team 102 was formed in 1997, but has been in the hands of Somerville since 1998. In the years the team has accumulated many awards and accomplished many goals. We have won the 2003 New Jersey Regional competition, along with other awards.

The Following Is Taken From Our Site: Team102.com

WHO ARE WE? - We are he Somerville High School robotics team. We are made up of students from the borough of Somerville, and the township of Branchburg.

WHAT IS THE ROBOTICS TEAM? - The robotics team was founded as a club and has evolved into a team since it was started in 1998, in SHS. The team designs and builds a robot to meet a challenge from the FIRST organization, with the help of sponsoring engineers, teachers, and mentors.

WHAT OR WHO IS FIRST? - FIRST is the initials of the organization founded by Dean Kamen, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The basic concept was to introduce high school students to technology based careers, and give them an advance in applying colleges, however, it has also grown to include various engineering, animation, and programming careers.

WHAT IS THE COMPETITION? - The competition is conceived by the Board of Directors of FIRST, and engineered by students at MIT. The competition changes yearly and is given out at the "kickoff", the first weekend of every January. The students, engineers, teachers & mentors go to a site, are given the rules, the challenge, and playing field specifications for the year.

WHEN DOES THE ROBOT HAVE TO BE COMPLETED? - From The kickoff, to the ship date is 6 weeks. The team receives a kit of parts, specs and rules with their registration fee of $5000.00 for a competition. Within that 6 weeks the team designs, builds, wires, programs, tests and practices their design.

HOW HAS FIRST GROWN? - FIRST grew from the first team in Michigan to over 2000 teams, from various locations around he world in 14 short years. Our team number is 102, and we were assigned that number in 1997.

HOW MANY COMPETITIONS DOES THE TEAM ATTEND? - This year the team attended the Trenton Regional and Long Island Regional competition. There is also the National in Atlanta, GA that, sadly, we did not qualify for. So normally 2 regionals and a competition per year (plus off season competitions)

WHO HELPS ON THE TEAM? - The team is helped by the parents, mentors, teachers, school administration, and sponsoring engineers. Even though the engineers are employed by the main sponsor, their time is spent on evenings and weekends.

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE COMPETITION? - To register for the first competition, you need to submit $6000.00, which includes your kit of parts. Each additional competition is $4000.00. There are also off season competitions that vary in price. Nationals cost $5000.00

HOW IS THIS PAID FOR? - By the main and major sponsors, other sponsors, team fundraising efforts, including sales, car washes, etc.

HOW CAN I HELP? - We are always looking for financial support, either in cash donations, or goods or services. Even donating some of you time to helping the team at the work site it help for us.
