Somerville High School has had the Robotics team since 1998., but Team 102 has been around since 1997 (originally a team in Hillsborough).
Somerville is doing all they can to make the best robot possible and go to Atlanta in the Spring. We would love to win another National... just like in 2003.
Ortho Clinical Diagnostics is our main sponsor and has been for years and years. Without their help, we would be lost. They donate money, engineers, and even their facility to us. They are one great sponsor and we are all very happy to have them aboard the Team 102 Gearheads.
The team is composed of the engineers, the, builders, the, programers, and the art team. Everyone is doing at least one thing to help with the team, but most, if not all of the member are part of more than one sub-team. Everyone has a say. There is no 'I' in team! Even the parents and the advisors help out a bunch, and we thank them very much for that.
Now for this year's team. The team is composed up of about 30 students from SHS; Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen. This year, we gained many new faces that will be around for quite a while. We have four (4) seniors on the team this year; two (2) returning members and two (2) new members. This year, we are fortunate enough to have eight (8) girls on the team.
Everyone put in a lot of time and effort into this team and building. Together, we were all like a family in our own. We were around each other a lot and talked a lot, so yes we are a family. If we had a meeting, you were certain to see and/or hear the robotics members telling the other members about it even though they knew. Whether they admit to it or not, we all have a close bond with each member on this team in one way or another.
Now, the team is composed of its mechanical team, the electrical team, art/design team, awards team, programmers, and many other teams. There are tons of jobs in robotics and each member was never not doing one thing at every meeting. We all were doing little things, and some people even had projects they were working on that required more time. Yet, everyone was always doing something. If one of us was standing around doing nothing, an adult was sure to pull you over, show you what they were doing, and make you do it. We all learned somehting in robotics, or many things.
This team is just great! We work well with each other, we work well with other teams, and we are just awesome. I am very happy to be a part of this team and I am sure that everyone on this team is happy they are a part of this team as well. Team 102 Gearheads rule!
Firestorm is our robot. We have decided to not change the robot name this year. (If you recall, the 2006 robot was also Firestorm). So I guess this is Firestorm 2.0. This year, Firestorm's job is to pick up pool inner tubes and get them onto a 10-foot tall, 8-foot wide "spider". The spider is composed of 24 PVC legs and circle diamond plate at the end that the inner tube has to get over. Bonus points can be scored by lifting a robot (entirely) 4 inches off the ground for 15 points OR 12 inches for 30 points.
This year's robot could either be 4-feet tall and weigh 120-pounds, 5-feet tall and 110 pounds, or 6-feet tall and weigh 100 pounds. We've opted to go with the 5-foot/110-pound robot. Weight and size do not include the battery and bumpers. The robot cannot be bigger than 28x28 to start, but may expand to 72 inches during the match. There is no limit if you are in your end zone (the width of the playing field).
